Micro Business
Possible investments to help the poor get out of poverty and become self sufficient.
1) Invest in a bean field
$25 to rent 2 ½ acres of land to plant
$75 for 100 lbs . of beans to sow
$40 fertilizer
A good return could pull a family out of poverty.
2) Invest in a nursery
$600 will buy many plants for resale. The land for the house in Cascabel is cleared and until I find a donor to build a 2 story house, the space can be used to house a nursery business. The nursery can easily be moved to another location once the funding for the house begins to come in. There is no such nursery anywhere near this town. And they are right off the Pan American Highway . The returns will let them buy more plants and feed the kids.
3) Build a Store and buy provisions to stock it.
We could sell cold drinks and meat from our freezer. Also corn, beans, rice, coffee, clothes, shoes, plants and the crafts of the kids to support the project. This is the corn and bean season when the price is low. Buying $1000 of beans and corn can bring a return of $1800. The corn and beans are later sold when the price goes up during the dry season.
We have 3 locations for a store. One is an empty lot being offered for $1500 where the going price there is $4000. It is in the town of Somoto near 10 neighborhoods. So there would be great traffic. Another location is in the town of Uniles where we cold also put a large oven. And lastly a store could go up by the road in Cascabel in front of the home which has a great place to park.
4) Bakery Oven
Build a large bakery oven with a screened in work place and roof, and buy the supplies to bake. We have professional bakers and sales people who are eager to own their own bakery. They travel far, are paid little and this would benefit the community. A large oven costs about $500. The structure can also be turned into a bread store with clothing, plants, and grains sold there as well. The ½ acre is already owned by the children’s organization.
5) Land investment $600
The land in Cascabel is going up. What once cost us $1,500 is now about $4,000-$5000.
But the lady who sold us the property will give us the 2 ½ acres next door for $600. We are finding out from the town if we can have permission to sell the rocky mountain dirt as fill for construction. Trucks would come and even shovel it away making the mountain a better place to farm later. A truck load of fill cost $120. So we would be able to sell the fill. We are working on this to see if it is feasible.
